Dickie got his love of horses, dogs and all that goes with it from his father, who was a gamekeeper.

At Knightsbridge barracks he then went through the Cavalry training and progressed up the ladder to becoming The Riding Master in charge of..." the jangling swords...cuirasses and 200 horses' hooves which still make the hair stand up on the back of your neck to this day."
